Overview
Translate Danish -dot- com has incorporated a translation engine powered by Google. This technology is still under development and is being worked on daily. While this translation technology is advancing rapidly, it is still, however, not comparable to human translation – especially for important documents or contacts. Machine translation is good for getting the “gist” of a document, phrase or word – one caveat is that the accuracy is unreliable and such translation misses any nuance or innuendo.
There are currently somewhat fewer translated language pairs supported – these are languages that can be translated easily from one to another. To see a full list of languages supported, click here. For the list of language pairs, click here.
What is “automatic translation”?
It’s translation produced by state-of-the-art technology, without the intervention of human translators – just like what you see on our home page. Automatic translation is also often referred to as machine translation.
Some of the foreign fonts do not display on my computer when I use the translation engine. How do I fix this?
The Google API uses unicode, a system of representing text and symbols that is supported by most modern browsers and operating systems. You might not have font rendering support installed on your system – this would be the source of your problem. To read these fonts, you will need to either enable complex script layout support or install Unicode fonts.
The following instructions are for the following Indic languages for which this API is currently supported – Bengali (bn), Gujarati (gu), Hindi (hi), Kannada (kn), Malayalam (ml), Marathi (mr), Nepali (ne), Punjabi (pa), Tamil (ta), Telugu (te) and Urdu (ur).
If you use Internet Explorer 6+ in Windows Vista/XP/2000, you should have no problems in viewing and editing text in most of the above languages.
Mozilla Firefox versions below 3.0 require support for complex text layout, otherwise they may display the Indic text incorrectly. The support for complex text layout is usually turned off by default, but this Wikipedia article gives a detailed explanation on how to turn it on in various operating systems.
Malayalam characters with chillus may not be rendered correctly on some systems even with complex script rendering enabled, in which case you can refer to this Wikia article for solutions to set this right.
The automatic translation quality isn’t as good as I would like it to be. Can you make it more accurate?
Google is constantly working on the machine translation algorithms. Eventhe most sophisticated software, however, cannot begin to approach the fluency of a native speaker or possess the skill of a professional translator. Automatic translation is very difficult, as the meaning of words depends upon the context in which they are used.
